Staying Healthy During Flu Season: A Guide for Seniors and Families

As the days get shorter and cooler across Northern California, flu season is settling in. For most of us, the flu means a miserable week on the couch. For older adults, it can be much more serious. During the severe 2024–2025 season, the CDC estimates that adults 65 and older accounted for 57% of flu-related hospitalizations and 71% of flu-related deaths.

The good news: a few simple steps go a long way. At CiminoCare, caring for our residents means caring for their health all year, and flu season is no exception . Here is how residents, families and caregivers can work together to stay well this fall and winter.

Start with the right flu shot

The single most important step is getting this season’s flu vaccine. The viruses change every year, and the 2026–2027 vaccines were updated, so last year’s shot won’t carry you through this winter.

Ask which vaccine you’re getting. For adults 65 and older, the CDC preferentially recommends one of three stronger options over a standard flu shot:

  • A high-dose flu vaccine
  • An adjuvanted flu vaccine (made with an ingredient that boosts the immune response)
  • A recombinant flu vaccine

If none of these is available, any age-appropriate flu vaccine is far better than skipping it.

Timing matters. September and October are ideal, but it is not too late. Vaccination is still recommended throughout the season while the flu is circulating. It takes about two weeks for protection to build.

Cost shouldn’t be a barrier. Medicare Part B covers the seasonal flu shot, usually at no cost when the provider accepts assignment.

Ask about other vaccines, too. Flu isn’t the only respiratory illness that peaks in winter. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether you’re up to date on COVID-19, RSV and pneumonia vaccines.

Everyday habits that keep germs at bay

A vaccine is the foundation, but daily habits add layers of protection:

  • Wash hands often. Use soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially before meals and after being out. Keep hand sanitizer handy for in between.
  • Keep hands away from your face. Germs travel easily from fingertips to eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Clean high-touch surfaces. Doorknobs, remote controls, phones, walkers and handrails all deserve a quick wipe.
  • Rest well. Good sleep helps the immune system do its job.
  • Eat well and drink plenty of fluids. Colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and plenty of water help the body stay strong. Dry winter air makes hydration easy to overlook.
  • Keep moving. Gentle activity like a daily walk, chair exercises or a stretching class supports overall health.
  • Stay connected, safely. Social time is good for body and mind. Simply step back from anyone who is coughing or sneezing, and cover your own coughs with a tissue or elbow.

Protecting our community together

In a senior living community, staying healthy is a team effort. Our caregivers and staff stay alert for early signs of illness, keep shared spaces clean, and encourage residents to stay current on their vaccines.

Families play a big part, too. Your visits mean the world to our residents, and a few simple steps help keep everyone safe:

  • Get your own flu shot. The CDC stresses vaccination for anyone who lives with or cares for someone at higher risk. CiminoCare partners offer onsite flu shots as a way to make it easy for residents and staff to get the flu shot. Please check at the front desk for dates and times.
  • Visit when you’re well. If you have a fever, cough or other symptoms, call or video chat instead. A phone call still brightens the day.
  • Wash or sanitize your hands when you arrive and before you leave.
  • Talk with our team if you have questions about your loved one’s health or vaccinations. We’re always happy to help.

Know the signs, and act early

Flu tends to come on suddenly. Watch for fever or chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache and unusual tiredness. In older adults, the flu can look different: sometimes the first sign is confusion, weakness or a loss of appetite rather than a high fever.

If flu symptoms appear, call a doctor right away. Antiviral medicines work best when started within the first day or two, and they can lower the risk of serious complications.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, sudden dizziness or confusion, severe weakness, or symptoms that improve and then return worse.

A healthy season ahead

Flu season doesn’t have to mean worry. With the right vaccine, everyday healthy habits and a community that looks out for one another, our residents can enjoy everything the cozy months have to offer, from holiday gatherings to warm conversations with friends.
