Our Team

Mark J. Cimino has worn many hats in preparation for his combined roles as CiminoCare CEO, Director, and Owner. He is responsible for all aspects of company business operations and financial stewardship. Under his leadership since 1999, we’ve grown from three to 14 senior living, assisted living, and memory care communities, with more on the drawing board. Like all family members, he began his caregiving career early, assisting his mother in providing home care for seniors. He has served in several capacities in senior housing and long-term care, including as an administrator for both skilled nursing and residential care facilities. Mark earned a B.A. degree from Pacific Union College and a J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
MaryAnn Cimino Shinn, as Regional Director, played an integral role in the formation of CiminoCare, Inc. As a Board of Directors member, her participation in the corporate planning process has helped guide our company through a recent period of substantial growth. She has worked in almost every capacity within the company, developing the corporate marketing program, helping shape Quality Assurance efforts, and serving as Operations Manager. Prior to joining CiminoCare she provided social services and marketing support for the Skilled Nursing Facility and Assisted Living divisions of a CCRC in Portland, Oregon. MaryAnn earned a B.A. from San Francisco State University and an M.A. from The College of Notre Dame.

Paula Hertel supports CiminoCare in strategic operations and marketing direction of its current communities, and in evaluating feasibility. She has spent 30 years focusing on improving service delivery systems for the elderly in executive management positions and consulting projects throughout the U.S. In addition, she has in-depth experience and a proven track record in senior housing and assisted living operations, team training, regulatory compliance and new program development. Paula was most recently Chief Operating Officer of AgeSong Senior Communities. Paula has a M.S.W. (Masters in Social Work) from San Jose State University.

Scott Eckstein Scott Eckstein is a key member of the CiminoCare acquisition and development team focused on strategic planning, market feasibility, proformas and project management with more than 30 years’ experience in senior living, healthcare, and best practices. Scott’s specialties include market and pro forma analysis, site selection, new community openings, employee recruiting and training, operations, budgeting, facilities management, sales and marketing, and turnarounds. Scott earned his B.S.B.A. from The American University in Washington, DC and an M.B.A. from the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Case Studies

Portola Gardens of San Francisco
Assisted Living & Memory Care

This beautiful historical landmark was suffering from declining census and a dated architectural plan that made it difficult to meet the needs of today’s assisted living residents. To offset these limitations, CiminoCare was innovative in assembling a mosaic of special programs and payer sources that allowed us to micro-target referral sources.

First was a high-care program that bridges the gap between traditional assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care; second was a dedicated hospice neighborhood; next was a wellness and mental health program for people living with challenges such as mild depression and anxiety who need a high-touch approach to their overall care and medication management.

The result is a revitalized community with census growth of over 20% over a period of 18 months, and a 15% increase in the average per-bed rate. CiminoCare has also rebuilt team morale and fostered a caregiving culture at Portola Gardens that fully embraces our values.

River Fountains of Lodi
Assisted Living

CiminoCare took advantage of an underperforming asset by acquiring the lease and engineering a turnaround after River Fountains ran into census and revenue declines coupled with regulatory problems. After a thorough evaluation to identify specific deficiencies, we executed on a turnaround plan that included securing funds to complete badly needed renovations, updating operations, and repositioning sales and marketing.

River Fountains was on a compliance plan with the state regulatory agency based on deficiencies found during inspections. Over a six-month period, CiminoCare was able to complete the renovations and correct the compliance issues.

Their payer mix was also creating a drag on profitability. We established one of our first Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) programs; once in place, the income per resident tripled. What started as a loss of $20,000 per month became a net income of $30,000 per month.
